RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
