Crucial Insights following the Champions Cup's First Round

With the first round of the latest Champions Cup concluded, we explore the primary lessons highlighted by the fixtures.

Top 14 superiority has defined the competition in recent years, with the previous five victors all representing France's elite division. But, the initial stage featured multiple convincing performances from potential contenders.

Bordeaux Seem Ready to Retain Their Crown

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were imperious in Europe last season, dismantling Toulouse in the last four and afterwards Northampton in the final.

Lying sixth in the French league, some have suggested about their ability to repeat the accomplishment now. Yet, in the first round, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are well-positioned of securing back-to-back titles with a high-scoring triumph on foreign soil in South Africa.

Faced with a challenging fixture at a hostile venue against a strong Bulls side including internationals like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they went into the break down 33-22 at the break.

But, true to their champion status, they unleashed their power in the second half, roaring back to secure a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls scoreless after the interval.

French try-scoring machines Damian Penaud and global award contender Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any outfit with such firepower on the flanks is a threat against whoever they face.

Impressive Bath Appear Equipped of Challenging for the Title

Bath's lone victory in Europe dates back almost 30 years ago. Since that time, they have perhaps not been more strongly positioned to add a second star.

The current English champions are leading the way in the league after six games and will be aiming to transfer that success into Europe – especially after a surprise group-stage exit last year.

Johann van Graan's men looked a very complete and composed outfit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are highly placed in the Celtic league.

They blend offensive flair – securing the bonus point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with tough tackling, keeping their visitors at a distance when they attempted a fightback.

With players including Finn Russell and Ben Spencer pulling the strings and strength in depth across the roster, they must be viewed as genuine challengers for a maiden Champions Cup since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the group stage the previous year occurred in the next fixture, an heartbreaking 22-21 loss at Benetton with a squad players.

Now with a Premiership title in their history and top in England once more, Van Graan could be inclined to place greater emphasis on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Tough Start

The tournament contains quality outfits in every pool, but Pool One appears poised to be one of the most competitive.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is said about securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's triumph at an opponent's ground at Sale on the opening night might just be pivotal.

The Glasgow Warriors were two scores behind after 20 minutes but fought back impressively, and two tries at the start of the second period gave them a precious maximum haul.

With this result, they provided their prospects of qualification a major lift and, by contrast, dealt a damaging defeat to the Sharks.

With Toulouse – commanding 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who easily overcame Clermont, in the same section, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And regarding Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They produced one of their finest displays in Europe in recent memory to surprise heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a fine weekend for rugby in Scotland.

Will Ioane Be the Key Addition of the Leinster Jigsaw?

When considering a contender you would expect to be challenging at the business end of the continental campaign, it would be multiple champions Leinster.

But in recent campaigns it has ended in disappointment, as they have promised much but fallen short. Finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites a year ago after following up a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the last 16 with a 52-0 demolition over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was believed that New Zealand full-back Jordie Barrett would be the missing ingredient to secure the title, but they were surprised and suffered a surprise defeat to Northampton Saints in the last four.

This season they are testing another New Zealand import, this time with Rieko Ioane, who provided a scoring pass on his debut in Saturday's 45-28 victory against Harlequins.

Will Ioane prove to return the cup to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Look Prepared to Challenge

Ever since the teams from South Africa became part of the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the quarter-finals, and last year no South African side was able to progress out of the group stage, with several squads not at full strength selected.

Will this be the campaign that is different? The Stormers are top of the URC and started their European campaign with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on Friday.

The reactions after the game were promising too, with players and coaches talking about their ambition, and the players such as Springboks Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse absent for the first match.

The Stormers appear the most likely contender for a South African side to progress far in the competition, yet don't count out the Sharks and Bulls, who both lost in their first games but did play Toulouse and Bordeaux respectively.

The English and French Sides Deliver a Thrilling Contest

There were multiple possibilities for game of the weekend, and that clash was right up there.

Pau have been enjoying a superb campaign, spearheaded by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and former Wasps scrum-half Dan Robson.

They are presently runner-up in the French championship and the stadium was buzzing at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
