European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
