The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
